Science has proven time and time again that size does not matter when it comes to unicellular organisms. Bacterium such as Helicobacter pylori is a very small organism that packs one heavy punch. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, pain, nausea and even death in some cases. The bacteria are the number one cause of all gastrointestinal ulcers and can be life threatening if left untreated. It is incredibly tough and will not go away over time. It is the only organism on the planet that can survive the acid found in the stomach cavity of humans.
This bacterium is responsible for many ulcers such as a gastric, stomach, and a duodenal ulcer. What happens is that it wears down the lining of the intestine, duodenum, or stomach. As the acidity levels of your stomach rise, the digestive liquids begin to eat away at the lining. After awhile, a hole appears in the lining and the ulcer is formed. Each time the stomach acid touches the gastric or duodenal ulcer it shoots pain through the person. Many of the symptoms of this disease flare-up resemble a heart attack or indigestion, so it is often not correctly diagnosed at first.
An endoscopic procedure is needed in order to accurately diagnose the presence of the H pylori bacterium. There is a breath test that can detect the bacteria, but it will not tell if an ulcer is present. The doctor will insert the small camera into the gastrointestinal tract. He or she will observe to see if there are any ulcerations occurring and while the scope is in the area, it will perform a small biopsy. If the bacteria are present in the tissue and have caused the ulcer, then your physician will prescribe an antibiotic such as amoxicillin, a proton pump inhibitor and clarithromycin.
Before the use of medicines to take care of the pylori ulcer, it was not uncommon to have treatments that involved neutralizing medications to keep down the amount of acidity. The ulcers would heal but would always come back. Why? Because the bacteria didn't go away. It continued to live in the stomach until treated with an antibiotic. Fortunately, we now know that this bacterium can cause ulcers and even some cancers. Treatment methods are up to date. The biggest threat now from this bacterium is that it is developing a resistance to available antibiotics.

Today's Tip On Ulcers
Peptic Ulcer Disease is treated with various methods. The first treatment is usually antacids, but if that is not working, then the doctor will prescribe medication to help control the acid in your stomach, which is what causes you the pain during an episode. If it is an H Pylori infection, then the doctor will need to prescribe an antibiotic to clear up the infection. You may want to consider switching some foods in your diet. Spicy foods do not cause an ulcer but they will exacerbate the problem greatly if you are not careful about what you eat. |
